2014 LL.M. Summer Experience
The LL.M. Summer Experience is an intensive summer learning opportunity for incoming foreign-educated LL.M. students. Its three separate components are designed to make it easier for students new to the U.S. and to our legal education system to become comfortable in the American law school environment, while at the same time allowing them to enroll in courses that count toward the LL.M. This "early start" is optional, but it is especially helpful to those students planning to sit for the New York Bar exam after graduation, and those hoping to meet the LL.M. degree requirements along with a specialized certificate during the academic year.
To Register for the 2014 LL.M. Summer Experience, please visit the Admitted Students Website.
The LL.M. Summer Experience begins with the non-credit Foundations of American Law and Legal Education course. It focuses on the basics of the U.S. legal system, especially the common law process, Constitutional Law and Civil Procedure. Foundations of American Law and Legal Education will be held from July 13 - August 1.
After Foundations of American Law and Legal Education ends, we offer students the option of enrolling in either a two-credit course on Professional Responsibility in the U.S. (required for the New York bar) or in the non-credit Summer Legal English Program. Those two courses are both offered from August 4 - August 22.
Students may enroll in any one of the three courses, or in Foundations plus either Professional Responsibility or the Summer Legal English Program.
Tuition for full-time LL.M. students:
- $2500 for one course
- $3750 for two courses (Foundations of American Law and Legal Education and EITHER Professional Responsibility in the U.S. or Summer Legal English Program)
Tuition for part-time LL.M. students:
- Foundations of American Law and Legal Education only: $2500
- Professional Responsibility in the U.S. only: $4140
- Summer Legal English Program only: $2500
- Foundations plus Professional Responsibility: $6640
- Foundations plus Summer Legal English Program: $3750
The application deadline is May 1, 2014. Applications received after May 1st will be considered on a space available basis.
Foreign-educated students admitted to Georgetown Law's LL.M. program are guaranteed admission to Foundations and to the Professional Responsibility course. Due to the design of the Summer Legal English Program, course enrollment will be limited.
On-campus housing is available ONLY during Foundations of American Law and Legal Education, July 13 – August 2, 2014. A private bedroom in a shared two-bedroom efficiency costs $1520; a private bedroom in a shared two-bedroom apartment (with living room) is $1570. Please note that the housing deposit payment portal is not yet available. We will notify all registrants when it becomes available.
Students reserve this housing for Foundations through the LL.M. Summer Experience application and NOT through the Office of Residence Life. The experience of living in our international community adds an especially enjoyable dimension to the academic and cultural aspects of U.S. law study.
Students interested in housing during Foundations will be required to pay a $500.00 housing deposit by May 1, 2014. That housing deposit is non-refundable after June 1, 2014.
On-campus housing is NOT available during Professional Responsibility or during the Summer Legal English Program.
