Associate Dean Jane Aiken Receives NYU Law Alumni Award

Georgetown University Law Center Associate Dean Jane Aiken has been selected as the 2013 recipient of the Legal Teaching Award from the New York University School of Law Alumni Association.

Established in 2005, the Legal Teaching Award “recognizes great teachers for scholarship and for extraordinary dedication to the education and training of law students.” It is presented each year to an NYU Law alumnus who is celebrating a reunion. Aiken, who graduated from NYU Law in 1983, is in her 30th reunion year.

Aiken is the associate dean for clinical education, public interest and community service programs and director of the Community Justice Project at Georgetown Law. She joined the Law Center faculty in 2007. Before coming to Georgetown, she spent 10 years at Washington University School of Law, where she was the William M. Van Cleve Professor of Law and director of the Civil Justice Clinic. She has also taught at University of South Carolina School of Law and Arizona State University College of Law.

Well-known for her work in clinical legal education and evidence, Aiken has written extensively on character evidence, domestic violence and critical pedagogy. She is a member of the Council on Legal Education of the ABA Section on Legal Education and Admission to the Bar. She is also a member of the American Law Institute and an American Bar Foundation fellow. 

Aiken was a Fulbright Senior Scholar at Tribhuvan Law Campus in Kathmandu, Nepal, in 2001, and continues her work there, particularly in the area of women’s rights. In 2000 and 2001, she was a Carnegie Scholar in the Carnegie Academy for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. 

An honors graduate of Hollins College, Aiken earned a J.D. cum laude from New York University School of Law, where she was a Root-Tilden Scholar. She received an LL.M. from Georgetown Law as a fellow in the Center for Applied Legal Studies.
