February 27, 2013 —
The Georgetown Law Journal, which launched in 1912, is beginning its second century — and more than 100 journal alums showed up at the Law Center on February 23 to celebrate. And with Supreme Court Associate Justice Elena Kagan as the special guest, it was no ordinary law review party.
As Volume 101 editor Lala Qadir (L’13) pointed out, it was a rare opportunity for lawyers to question the justice, rather than the other way around. And the former Harvard Law dean seemed right at home with the students as she fielded questions for more than an hour in an off-the-record conversation.
Other speakers included Georgetown Law Dean William M. Treanor and Professor Sherman Cohn (F’54, L’57, LL.M.’60), himself a journal alum and longtime adviser. Cohn shared his own reflections on the journal and noted the latest milestone: Shauna Kramer (L’14) will succeed Qadir as journal editor-in-chief, the first time that a woman will succeed another woman in the role. So it was fitting to have Kagan, the fourth woman to serve on the court, as the evening’s guest speaker.
